Rock Cut Brewing Company receives national honors

Rock Cut Brewing Company won a bronze medal at the 2022 Great American Beer Festival®
(GABF) competition for the Wooden Mayhem in the Wood and Barrel-aged Strong Stout
category. Presented by the Brewers Association, GABF is the nation’s largest commercial beer
competition and recognizes the most outstanding beers produced in the United States.

“From the second beer we brewed here, our Tyndall Porter, to our most recent release of the
Goblin Forest Black IPA, roasted beers have been a significant part of our lineup. Stouts in
particular have played a prominent role in our barrel program and specialty releases. To receive
this kind of recognition, and for a beer that took this time and patience to make, is truly
gratifying,” said head brewer and owner, Matthew Heiser.

This version of the Wooden Mayhem is an Imperial Stout, barrel-aged for a year and a half, and
then blended with a barleywine (a rich brown ale) to meld caramel and dried-pit fruit notes
with the rich roast and licorice of the stout and the vanilla and whisky from the barrel. “I’ve
always been a fan of blending beers – so when I tried a stout/barleywine blend at my favorite
hometown brewery, I knew I wanted to take those flavors back to Estes with me and see what a
Rock Cut version would be like,” said brewer, Kate Stephens.

“We try to take a very deliberate and technical approach to brewing, but when a beer rests in a
barrel, the final result is always somewhat in question,” said Heiser. “The original creation in the
brewhouse, this beer developing over time in the barrel, and then us finding just the right blend
to bring out all those aromas demonstrate both the science and creativity that we get to play
with here.”

The 2022 GABF competition winners were announced October 8th at the Great American Beer
Festival awards ceremony held in Denver, Colorado and were selected by an international panel
of 235 expert judges awarding 300 medals from the 9,904 entries, plus 94 Collaboration and 35
Pro-Am entries, received from 2,154 U.S. breweries.

“Each year the Great American Beer Festival showcases the best that American brewers have to
offer,” said Chris Williams, competition director, Great American Beer Festival. “With more than
9,900 entries, this year’s competition was the most competitive to date. Congratulations to all
the winners who truly demonstrated why the U.S. is the best brewing nation in the world.”
